Profit margin and markup example
With revenue of ₹1,000 and cost of ₹600, gross profit is ₹400. Gross margin is ₹400 ÷ ₹1,000 = 40%. Markup is ₹400 ÷ ₹600 ≈ 66.7%.
Gross margin uses revenue as the denominator. Markup uses cost. Use the same currency and time period for both inputs.
How it works
Margin divides gross profit by revenue. Markup divides gross profit by cost. A zero cost has no defined markup.
